Why hair treated with Follicusan takes longer to dry

Freshly washed hair with water drops, Follicusan

Many customers notice it after a few weeks with ONNI products: Their hair takes noticeably longer to dry after washing. This is initially irritating. In fact, it is one of the first visible signs that something has changed in the hair, and in the right direction.

The short answer Follicusan works at the hair root. What regrows there has more substance, and over time, more hairs are on the head simultaneously. More hair mass with a closed cuticle binds more water, so drying takes longer. Porous, damaged hair, on the other hand, dries quickly because it cannot hold moisture in the first place.

Why healthy hair holds water

A single hair consists at its core of the fibrous layer, the cortex, in which the keratin strands are located. Around it lies the cuticle: cells layered like roof tiles that protect the core. Healthy hair can absorb about one-third of its own weight in water, part of which is stored in the cortex.

The cuticle determines how quickly this water disappears again. If it lies flat, the way out is long. If it stands up because the hair is damaged by heat, coloring, or friction, the water evaporates quickly. This is precisely why very damaged hair often feels surprisingly dry quickly.

Porous hair

Open cuticle. Absorbs water quickly, releases it just as quickly. Short drying time, but little elasticity and shine.

Healthy hair

Closed cuticle. Binds moisture inside and releases it slowly. Longer drying time, but supple and resilient.

Denser hair

More hair in the same area simply means more total mass that holds water. This also extends the drying time.

What Follicusan changes in the hair

Follicusan is an active ingredient complex based on milk protein that acts at the hair root, more precisely at the dermal papilla, the supply center of the hair follicle. The active ingredient does not directly make the individual hair more absorbent. The chain is different, and it has two links:

  • The fiber gains substance. Hair that regrows under better conditions is more robust. More keratin mass per hair means more volume in which water can be bound.
  • The structure becomes denser. If fewer hairs prematurely enter the resting phase, more hairs are simultaneously on the head. Twenty percent more hair also means about twenty percent more water to be removed during washing.

In addition, there is the surrounding formula. Shampoo, conditioner, and mask are designed to smooth and close the cuticle. Smoothed hair not only looks shinier, it also retains absorbed moisture longer inside.

The everyday test: how you recognize it

If the longer drying time comes from healthier hair, it's not just the clock on the hairdryer that changes. It practically always comes with:

  • Hair that feels heavier when wet and stretches elastically when combed instead of breaking
  • More shine when dry, because the cuticle reflects light evenly
  • Less flyaways and fewer split ends
  • A generally fuller hairline

When a long drying time is not a good sign

In fairness: Not every longer drying time is related to healthier hair. There are three cases where something else is behind it.

  • Product residues. Silicones and heavy oils from other products form a film around the hair that traps water. The hair then quickly appears greasy and weighed down. All ONNI products are silicone-free.
  • Conditioner on the scalp. Conditioner belongs in the lengths, not at the roots. At the roots, it weighs down the hair and the roots take longer to dry.
  • Very hard water. Limescale deposits accumulate around the fiber. Here, occasional deep cleansing helps.

If the hair feels dull, sticky, or heavy, it's due to one of these points and not an improved hair structure.

What you can do when drying

  • Squeeze instead of rub. Wet hair is most sensitive in its structure. Gently squeeze out water and only press the towel, do not rub.
  • Microfiber or cotton T-shirt. Both absorb water without roughing up the cuticle like a coarse terry towel.
  • Ten minutes of air drying. Then blow-dry. This saves a good portion of heat time.
  • Heat protection before every blow-dry. The ONNI Heat Protector protects up to 230 °C and prevents exactly the damage that would open the cuticle again.
  • Medium setting, with the hair's grain. The airflow should go from top to bottom, so the cuticle stays flat.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much longer does drying take approximately?

That depends on the initial length, density, and method. Those who notice a change usually speak of a few minutes, not a different order of magnitude.

Do I have to blow-dry longer and does this damage my hair?

Not necessarily. With air drying, heat protection, and a medium setting, the heat time remains the same, even if the hair holds more water overall.

Is this a sign that the products are working?

It is an indication, not proof. It becomes conclusive together with the other points: more shine, more elasticity, less split ends, fuller roots.

Does this also apply to the SENSITIVE series?

Yes. The difference of the SENSITIVE formula lies in the absence of fragrances and essential oils, not in the caring effect on the fiber.

My hair still dries very quickly. Is that bad?

No. Drying time is highly dependent on hair type, length, and thickness. Fine hair naturally dries quickly, even if it is perfectly healthy.
